The WatchMen from the house of Israel on the Wall

Succoth - Simchat Torah

Sukkot, or Feast of Booths, is the third holiday in the Hebrew month of Tishrei, and is one of the most important Israelite holidays. Sukkot is one of the three pilgrimage holidays, when the whole of the house of Israel would come to Jerusalem in ancient times, when the Holy Temple was there, and would offer animal and grain sacrifices. It is a particularly joyous holiday that combines religious and agricultural elements.

Sukkot originates in the Torah, and commemorates the booths in which the Israelites lived in the desert after the exodus from Egypt. A sukka is a temporary dwelling, usually with wooden or cloth walls on at least three of its four sides and a roof made of tree branches (traditionally palm fronds) through which the sky can be seen.

Another explanation for the custom of building booths is to commemorate the booths built in the fields at harvest time to protect the harvested crops.

Sukkot is also known as the Harvest holiday, as it is celebrated in the autumn, after the summer harvest and before the planting of winter crops. A central theme in the holiday prayers is rain: the farmers thank Elohim for this year’s harvest and pray for rain for the coming year.

Sukkot lasts seven days, from the 15th to the 21st of the Hebrew month of Tishrei (usually the middle of October). The first day and last days are particularly festive: the first is a holy day, a rest day, when no productive work is allowed, similar to Shabbat, so most businesses are closed; the eighth day from the beginning of Sukkot is called Shemini Atseret, is a separate holiday. The intermediate days are similar to weekdays.

Torah: Lev 22:26-23:44, Num 29:12-16 Haftorah: Zech 14:1-21 Suggested Haberith HaChadashah Reading: Jn 1:10-14; Rev 7:1-10; 21:1-4

Lev 22:26-33  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

27  “When a bull or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall be seven days with its mother. And from the eighth day and thereafter it is acceptable as an offering made by fire to יהוה.

28  “But do not slaughter a cow or a sheep and its young on the same day.

29  “And when you bring a slaughtering of thanksgiving to יהוה, bring it for your acceptance.

30  “It is eaten that same day, leave none of it till morning. I am יהוה.

31  “And you shall guard My commands and do them. I am יהוה.

32  “And do not profane My set-apart Name, and I shall be set-apart among the children of Yisra’ĕl. I am יהוה, who sets you apart,

33  who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, to be your Elohim. I am יהוה.”

Lev 23:1-44  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

2  “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘The appointed times of יהוה, which you are to proclaim as set-apart gatherings, My appointed times, are these:

3  ‘Six days work is done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a set-apart gathering. You do no work, it is a Sabbath to יהוה in all your dwellings.

4  ‘These are the appointed times of יהוה, set-apart gatherings which you are to proclaim at their appointed times.

5  ‘In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, between the evenings, is the Passover to יהוה.

6  ‘And on the fifteenth day of this month is the Festival of Unleavened Bread to יהוה – seven days you eat unleavened bread.

7  ‘On the first day you have a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work.

8  ‘And you shall bring an offering made by fire to יהוה for seven days. On the seventh day is a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work.’ ”

9  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

10  “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and you shall say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest.

11  ‘And he shall wave the sheaf before יהוה, for your acceptance. On the morrow after the Sabbath the priest waves it.

12  ‘And on that day when you wave the sheaf, you shall prepare a male lamb a year old, a perfect one, as a burnt offering to יהוה,

13  and its grain offering: two-tenths of an ĕphah of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to יהוה, a sweet fragrance, and its drink offering: one-fourth of a hin of wine.

14  ‘And you do not eat bread or roasted grain or fresh grain until the same day that you have brought an offering to your Elohim – a law forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

15  ‘And from the morrow after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, you shall count for yourselves: seven completed Sabbaths.

16  ‘Until the morrow after the seventh Sabbath you count fifty days, then you shall bring a new grain offering to יהוה.

17  ‘Bring from your dwellings for a wave offering two loaves of bread, of two-tenths of an ĕphah of fine flour they are, baked with leaven, first-fruits to יהוה.

18  ‘And besides the bread, you shall bring seven lambs a year old, perfect ones, and one young bull and two rams. They are a burnt offering to יהוה, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering made by fire for a sweet fragrance to יהוה.

19  ‘And you shall offer one male goat as a sin offering, and two male lambs a year old, as a peace offering.

20  ‘And the priest shall wave them, besides the bread of the first-fruits, as a wave offering before יהוה, besides the two lambs. They are set-apart to יהוה for the priest.

21  ‘And on this same day you shall proclaim a set-apart gathering for yourselves, you do no servile work on it – a law forever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

22  ‘And when you reap the harvest of your land do not completely reap the corners of your field when you reap, and do not gather any gleaning from your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the stranger. I am יהוה your Elohim.’ ”

23  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

24  “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, saying, ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you have a rest, a remembrance of blowing of trumpets, a set-apart gathering.

25  ‘You do no servile work, and you shall bring an offering made by fire to יהוה.’ ”

26  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

27  “On the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be a set-apart gathering for you. And you shall afflict your beings, and shall bring an offering made by fire to יהוה.

28  “And you do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before יהוה your Elohim.

29  “For any being who is not afflicted on that same day, he shall be cut off from his people.

30  “And any being who does any work on that same day, that being I shall destroy from the midst of his people.

31  “You do no work – a law forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

32  ‘It is a Sabbath of rest to you, and you shall afflict your beings. On the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you observe your Sabbath.”

33  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

34  “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, saying, ‘On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the Festival of Booths for seven days to יהוה.

35  ‘On the first day is a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work.

36  ‘For seven days you bring an offering made by fire to יהוה. On the eighth day there shall be a set-apart gathering for you, and you shall bring an offering made by fire to יהוה. It is a closing festival, you do no servile work.

37  ‘These are the appointed times of יהוה which you proclaim as set-apart gatherings, to bring an offering made by fire to יהוה, a burnt offering and a grain offering, a slaughtering and drink offerings, as commanded for every day –

38  besides the Sabbaths of יהוה, and besides your gifts, and besides all your vows, and besides all your voluntary offerings which you give to יהוה.

39  ‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather in the fruit of the land, observe the festival of יהוה for seven days. On the first day is a rest, and on the eighth day a rest.

40  ‘And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of good trees, branches of palm trees, twigs of leafy trees, and willows of the stream, and shall rejoice before יהוה your Elohim for seven days.

41  ‘And you shall observe it as a festival to יהוה for seven days in the year – a law forever in your generations. Observe it in the seventh month.

42  ‘Dwell in booths for seven days; all who are native Yisra’ĕlites dwell in booths,

43  so that your generations know that I made the children of Yisra’ĕl dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Mitsrayim. I am יהוה your Elohim.’ ”

44  Thus did Mosheh speak of the appointed times of יהוה to the children of Yisra’ĕl.

Num 29:12-16  ‘And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month you have a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work. And you shall observe a festival to יהוה seven days,

13  and you shall bring near a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה: thirteen young bulls, two rams, fourteen lambs a year old, perfect ones they are,

14  and their grain offering: fine flour mixed with oil, three-tenths of an ĕphah for each of the thirteen bulls, two-tenths for each of the two rams,

15  and one-tenth for each of the fourteen lambs,

16  and one male goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

Haftorah: Zech 14:1-21

Zec 14:1-21  See, a day shall come for יהוה, and your spoil shall be divided in your midst.

2  And I shall gather all the gentiles to battle against Yerushalayim1. And the city shall be taken, the houses plundered, and the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into exile, but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Footnote: 1Joel 3:2, Zeph. 3:8, Rev. 16:14.

3  And יהוה shall go forth, and He shall fight against those gentiles, as He fights in the day of battle.

4  And in that day His feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives, which faces Yerushalayim on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, a very great valley, and half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south.

5  And you shall flee to the valley of My mountain – for the valley of the mountains reaches to Atsal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziyah sovereign of Yehuḏah. And יהוה my Elohim shall come – all the set-apart ones with You.

6  And in that day it shall be: there is no light, it is dark.

7  And it shall be one day which is known to יהוה, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.

8  And in that day it shall be that living waters flow from Yerushalayim1, half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea, in summer as well as in winter. Footnote: 1Rev. 22:1-2.

9  And יהוה shall be Sovereign over all the earth1. In that day there shall be one יהוה, and His Name one. Footnote: 1Isa. 24:23, Dan. 2:44, Rev. 11:15.

10  All the land shall be changed into a desert plain from Geḇa to Rimmon south of Yerushalayim, and she shall be raised up and inhabited in her place from Binyamin’s Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Ḥanan’ĕl to the winepresses of the sovereign.

11  And they shall dwell in her, and there shall be no more utter destruction1, but Yerushalayim shall be safely inhabited. Footnote: 1Mal. 4:6.

12  And this is the plague with which יהוה plagues all the people who fought against Yerushalayim: their flesh shall decay while they stand on their feet, and their eyes decay in their sockets, and their tongues decay in their mouths.

13  And it shall be in that day that a great confusion from יהוה is among them, and everyone of them shall seize the hand of his neighbour, and his hand rise up against his neighbour’s hand.

14  And Yehuḏah shall fight at Yerushalayim as well. And the wealth of all the gentiles round about shall be gathered together: gold, and silver, and garments in great quantities.

15  So also is the plague on the horse and the mule, on the camel and the donkey, and on all the cattle that are in those camps – as this plague.

16  And it shall be that all who are left from all the gentiles which came up against Yerushalayim, shall go up from year to year to bow themselves to the Sovereign, יהוה of hosts, and to observe the Festival of Booths.

17  And it shall be, that if anyone of the clans of the earth does not come up to Yerushalayim to bow himself to the Sovereign, יהוה of hosts, on them there is to be no rain.

18  And if the clan of Mitsrayim does not come up and enter in, then there is no rain. On them is the plague with which יהוה plagues the gentiles who do not come up to observe the Festival of Booths.

19  This is the punishment of Mitsrayim and the punishment of all the gentiles that do not come up to observe the Festival of Booths.

20  In that day “SET-APART TO יהוה” shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. And the pots in the House of יהוה shall be like the bowls before the altar.

21  And every pot in Yerushalayim and Yehuḏah shall be set-apart to יהוה of hosts. And all those who slaughter shall come and take them and cook in them. And there shall no longer be a merchant in the House of יהוה of hosts, in that day.

Haftorah: I Ki 8:2-21

1Ki 8:2-21  And all the men of Yisra’ĕl assembled to Sovereign Shelomoh at the festival in the month of Ěythanim, which is the seventh month.

3  And all the elders of Yisra’ĕl came, and the priests took up the ark,

4  and brought up the ark of יהוה, and the Tent of Meeting, and all the set-apart utensils that were in the Tent. And the priests and the Lĕwites brought them up,

5  and Sovereign Shelomoh, and all the congregation of Yisra’ĕl who had assembled with him, were with him before the ark, slaughtering so many sheep and cattle, that they could not be counted or numbered.

6  And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of יהוה to its place, into the Speaking Place of the House, to the Most Set-apart Place, under the wings of the keruḇim,

7  for the keruḇim spread two wings over the place of the ark, and the keruḇim covered over the ark and its poles.

8  And the poles extended so that the ends of the poles were seen from the set-apart place, in front of the Speaking Place, but they were not seen from outside. And they are there to this day.

9  There was naught in the ark, only the two tablets of stone which Mosheh put there at Ḥorĕḇ, where יהוה made a covenant with the children of Yisra’ĕl, when they came out of the land of Mitsrayim.

10  And it came to be, when the priests came out of the Set-apart Place, that the cloud filled the House of יהוה,

11  so that the priests were unable to stand and perform the service because of the cloud, for the esteem of יהוה filled the House of יהוה.

12  And Shelomoh said, “יהוה has said He would dwell in the dark cloud.

13  I have indeed built You an exalted house, an established place for You to dwell in forever.”

14  And the sovereign turned around and blessed all the assembly of Yisra’ĕl, while all the assembly of Yisra’ĕl was standing.

15  And he said, “Blessed be יהוה Elohim of Yisra’ĕl, who spoke with His mouth to my father Dawiḏ, and with His hand has filled it, saying,

16  ‘Since the day I brought My people Yisra’ĕl out of Mitsrayim, I have chosen no city from any tribe of Yisra’ĕl in which to build a house for My Name to be there, but I chose Dawiḏ to be over My people Yisra’ĕl.’

17  “And it was in the heart of my father Dawiḏ to build a house for the Name of יהוה Elohim of Yisra’ĕl.

18  “But יהוה said to my father Dawiḏ, ‘Because it has been in your heart to build a house for My Name, you did well that it was in your heart.

19  ‘Only, you do not build the house, but your son, who is coming from your loins, he does build the house for My Name.’

20  “Now יהוה has established His word which He spoke, and I have been raised up instead of my father Dawiḏ, and sit on the throne of Yisra’ĕl, as יהוה promised, and built a house for the Name of יהוה Elohim of Yisra’ĕl,

21  and have appointed there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of יהוה which He made with our fathers, when He brought them out of the land of Mitsrayim.”

Deu 14:22-29  “You shall tithe without fail all the yield of your grain that the field brings forth year by year.

23  “And you shall eat before יהוה your Elohim, in the place where He chooses to make His Name dwell, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, and of the firstlings of your herds and your sheep, so that you learn to fear יהוה your Elohim always.

24  “But when the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to bring the tithe, or when the place where יהוה your Elohim chooses to put His Name is too far from you, when יהוה your Elohim is blessing you,

25  then you shall give it in silver, and shall take the silver in your hand and go to the place which יהוה your Elohim chooses.

26  “And you shall use the silver for whatever your being desires: for cattle or sheep, for wine or strong drink, for whatever your being desires. And you shall eat there before יהוה your Elohim, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.

27  “And do not forsake the Lĕwite who is within your gates, for he has no part nor inheritance with you.

28  “At the end of every third year you bring out all the tithe of your increase of that year and store it up within your gates.

29  “And the Lĕwite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the sojourner and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, shall come and eat and be satisfied, so that יהוה your Elohim does bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

Num 29:35-40  ‘On the eighth day you have an assembly, you do no servile work,

36  and you shall bring near a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, a sweet fragrance to יהוה: one bull, one ram, seven lambs a year old, perfect ones,

37  their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bull, for the ram, and for the lambs, by their number, according to the right-ruling,

38  and one goat as a sin offering, besides the continual burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.

40  And Mosheh spoke to the children of Yisra’ĕl according to all יהוה had commanded Mosheh.

Haftorah: I Ki 8:54-9:1

1Ki 8:54-66  And it came to be, when Shelomoh had ended praying all this prayer and supplication to יהוה, that he rose up from before the altar of יהוה, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to the heavens.

55  And he stood and blessed all the assembly of Yisra’ĕl with a loud voice, saying,

56  “Blessed be יהוה, who has given rest to His people Yisra’ĕl, according to all that He promised. There has not failed one word of all His good word, which He promised through His servant Mosheh.

57  יהוה our Elohim is with us as He was with our fathers – He does not leave us nor forsake us –

58  to incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways, and to guard His commands and His laws and His right- rulings, which He commanded our fathers.

59  “And let these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before יהוה, be near יהוה our Elohim day and night, to maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Yisra’ĕl, the matter of each day in its day,

60  so that all the peoples of the earth might know that יהוה is Elohim, there is no one else.

61  “Let your heart therefore be perfect to יהוה our Elohim, to walk in His laws and guard His commands, as at this day.”

62  And the sovereign and all Yisra’ĕl with him made slaughterings before יהוה.

63  And Shelomoh brought peace offerings, which he slaughtered to יהוה, twenty-two thousand bulls and one hundred and twenty thousand sheep. Thus the sovereign and all the children of Yisra’ĕl dedicated the House of יהוה.

64  On that day the sovereign set apart the middle of the courtyard that was in front of the House of יהוה, for there he made burnt offerings, and the grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that was before יהוה was too small to contain the burnt offerings, and the grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.

65  And Shelomoh at that time observed the Festival, and all Yisra’ĕl with him, a great assembly from the entrance of Ḥamath to the wadi of Mitsrayim, before יהוה our Elohim, seven days and seven days – fourteen days.

66  On the eighth day he sent the people away. And they blessed the sovereign, and went to their tents rejoicing and glad of heart for all the goodness that יהוה had done for His servant Dawiḏ, and for Yisra’ĕl His people.

3  And see, Mosheh and Ěliyahu appeared to them, talking with Him.

4  And Kĕpha answering, said to יהושע, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, let us make here three booths: one for You, one for Mosheh, and one for Ěliyahu.”1 Footnote:1Mark 9:4.

6  And when the taught ones heard, they fell on their faces and were much afraid.

7  But יהושע came near and touched them and said, “Rise, and do not be afraid.”

8  And having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but יהושע only.

9  And as they were coming down from the mountain, יהושע commanded them, saying, “Do not mention the vision to anyone until the Son of Aḏam is raised from the dead.”

Mar 12:28-33  And one of the scribes coming near, hearing them reasoning together, knowing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first command of all?”

30  ‘And you shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first command.

31  “And the second, like it, is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other command greater than these.”

32  And the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one Elohim, and there is no other besides Him.

33  “And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the being, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself, is more than all the burnt offerings and offerings.”

2  And he said, “יהוה came from Sinai, and rose from Sĕʽir for them. He shone forth from Mount Paran, and came with ten thousands of set-apart ones – at His right hand a law of fire for them.

3  Indeed, He loves the peoples, all His set-apart ones are in Your hand. And they, they sat down at Your feet, receiving Your Words.

4  Mosheh commanded us a Torah, an inheritance of the assembly of Yaʽaqoḇ.

5  And He was Sovereign in Yeshurun, when the heads of the people were gathered, the tribes of Yisra’ĕl.

7  And this of Yehuḏah, and he said, “Hear, יהוה, the voice of Yehuḏah, and bring him to his people. His hands shall fight for him, and You be a help against his enemies.”

8  And of Lĕwi he said, “Your Tummim and Your Urim belong to Your kind one, whom You tried at Massah, with whom You contended at the waters of Meriḇah,

9  who said of his father and mother, ‘I have not seen them.’ And he did not acknowledge his brothers, or know his own children, for they have guarded Your Word and watched over Your covenant.

11  “O יהוה, bless his strength, and accept the work of his hands. Smite the loins of those who rise against him, and of those who hate him, that they rise no more.”

12  Of Binyamin he said, “Let the beloved of יהוה dwell in safety by Him, shielding him all the day, as he dwells between His shoulders.”

13  And of Yosĕph he said, “Blessed of יהוה is his land, with the choicest from the heavens, with the dew, and the deep lying beneath,

14  with the choice fruits of the sun, with the choice yield of the months,

15  with the finest of the ancient mountains, with the choicest of the everlasting hills,

16  with the choicest of the earth and all that fills it, and the good pleasure of Him who dwelt in the bush. Let it come on the head of Yosĕph, and on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

17  “His splendour is like a first-born bull, and his horns are like the horns of the wild ox. With them he pushes the peoples to the ends of the earth. And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Menashsheh.”

18  And of Zeḇulun he said, “Rejoice, O Zeḇulun, in your going out, and Yissasḵar in your tents!

19  “They call peoples to the mountain, there they bring offerings of righteousness, for they draw from the riches of the seas, and treasures hidden in the sand.”

20  And of Gaḏ he said, “Blessed is he who enlarges Gaḏ. He dwells as a lion, and shall tear off the arm, also the crown.

21  “And he chose the best for himself, for there the portion of the lawgiver was hidden. And he came with the heads of the people. The righteousness of יהוה he did, and His right-rulings with Yisra’ĕl.”

22  And of Dan he said, “Dan is a lion’s cub, that leaps from Bashan.”

23  And of Naphtali he said, “O Naphtali, satisfied with pleasure, and filled with the blessing of יהוה, possess the west and the south.”

24  And of Ashĕr he said, “Ashĕr is most blessed of sons. Let him be accepted by his brothers, and dip his foot in oil.

25  “Your sandals are iron and bronze, and your strength as your days.

26  “O Yeshurun, there is no one like Ěl, riding the heavens to help you, and on the clouds, in His excellency.

27  “The Elohim of old is a refuge, and beneath are everlasting arms. And He drives out the enemy from before you and says, ‘Destroy!’

28  “Thus Yisra’ĕl dwells in safety, the fountain of Yaʽaqoḇ alone, in a land of grain and new wine. His heavens also drop down dew.

29  “Blessed are you, O Yisra’ĕl! Who is like you, a people saved by יהוה, the shield of your help, and He who is the sword of your excellency! And your enemies are subdued for you, and you tread down their high places.”

Deu 34:1-12  And Mosheh went up from the desert plains of Mo’aḇ to Mount Neḇo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Yeriḥo. And יהוה showed him all the land of Gilʽaḏ as far as Dan,

2  and all Naphtali and the land of Ephrayim and Menashsheh, all the land of Yehuḏah as far as the Western Sea,

3  and the Negeḇ, and the plain of the Valley of Yeriḥo, the city of palm trees, as far as Tsoʽar.

4  And יהוה said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Aḇraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Yaʽaqoḇ, saying, ‘To your seed I give it.’ I have let you look at it with your eyes, but you do not pass over there.”

5  And Mosheh the servant of יהוה died there in the land of Mo’aḇ, according to the mouth of יהוה.

6  And He buried him in a valley in the land of Mo’aḇ, opposite Bĕyth Peʽor, and no one knows his burial place to this day.

7  And Mosheh was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his freshness gone.

8  And the children of Yisra’ĕl wept for Mosheh in the desert plains of Mo’aḇ thirty days. And the days of weeping and mourning for Mosheh were completed.

9  And Yehoshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Mosheh had laid his hands on him. And the children of Yisra’ĕl listened to him, and did as יהוה had commanded Mosheh.

10  And since then no prophet has arisen in Yisra’ĕl like Mosheh, whom יהוה knew face to face,

5  And Elohim called the light ‘day’ and the darkness He called ‘night.’ And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the first day.

6  And Elohim said, “Let an expanse come to be in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

7  And Elohim made the expanse, and separated the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse. And it came to be so.

8  And Elohim called the expanse ‘heavens.’ And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the second day.

9  And Elohim said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it came to be so.

10  And Elohim called the dry land ‘earth,’ and the collection of the waters He called ‘seas.’ And Elohim saw that it was good.

11  And Elohim said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the plant that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth.” And it came to be so.

12  And the earth brought forth grass, the plant that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And Elohim saw that it was good.

13  And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the third day.

14  And Elohim said, “Let lights come to be in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and appointed times, and for days and years,

15  and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth.” And it came to be so.

16  And Elohim made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars.

17  And Elohim set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

18  and to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And Elohim saw that it was good.

19  And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the fourth day.

20  And Elohim said, “Let the waters teem with shoals of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth on the face of the expanse of the heavens.”

21  And Elohim created great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters teemed, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And Elohim saw that it was good.

22  And Elohim blessed them, saying, “Bear fruit and increase, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”

23  And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the fifth day.

24  And Elohim said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: livestock and creeping creatures and beasts of the earth, according to its kind.” And it came to be so.

25  And Elohim made the beast of the earth according to its kind, livestock according to its kind, and all that creep on the earth according to its kind. And Elohim saw that it was good.

26  And Elohim said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the earth and over all the creeping creatures that creep on the earth.”

27  And Elohim created the man in His image, in the image of Elohim He created him – male and female He created them.

28  And Elohim blessed them, and Elohim said to them, “Bear fruit and increase, and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over all creatures moving on the earth.”

29  And Elohim said, “See, I have given you every plant that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed, to you it is for food.

30  “And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to every creeping creature on the earth, in which there is life, every green plant is for food.” And it came to be so.

31  And Elohim saw all that He had made, and see, it was very good. And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the sixth day.

Gen 2:1-3  Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their array.

2  And on the seventh day Elohim completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.

3  And Elohim blessed the seventh day and set it apart, because on it He rested from all His work which Elohim in creating had made.

History: Josh 1:1-18

Jos 1:1-18  And it came to be, after the death of Mosheh the servant of יהוה, that יהוה spoke to Yehoshua son of Nun, the assistant of Mosheh, saying,

2  “Mosheh My servant is dead, so now, arise, pass over this Yardĕn, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them, to the children of Yisra’ĕl.

3  “Every place on which the sole of your foot treads I have given you, as I spoke to Mosheh.

4  “From the wilderness and this Leḇanon even as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Ḥittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, is your border.

5  “No man is going to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Mosheh, so I am with you. I do not fail you nor forsake you.

6  “Be strong and courageous, for you are to let this people inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

7  “Only be strong and very courageous, to guard to do according to all the Torah which Mosheh My servant commanded you. Do not turn from it right or left, so that you act wisely wherever you go.

8  “Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you guard to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and act wisely.

9  “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, nor be discouraged, for יהוה your Elohim is with you wherever you go.”

10  And Yehoshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

11  “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare food for yourselves, for within three days you are passing over this Yardĕn, to go in to possess the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you to possess.’ ”

12  And Yehoshua spoke to the Re’uḇĕnites and to the Gaḏites and to half the tribe of Menashsheh, saying,

13  “Remember the word which Mosheh, servant of יהוה, commanded you, saying, ‘יהוה your Elohim is giving you rest, and He shall give you this land.’

14  “Let your wives, your little ones, and your livestock stay in the land which Mosheh gave you beyond the Yardĕn. But you shall pass before your brothers in fives, all your brave fighters, and shall help them,

15  until יהוה has given your brothers rest, as unto you. So shall they also take possession of the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession, and shall possess that which Mosheh the servant of יהוה gave you beyond the Yardĕn toward the rising of the sun.”

16  And they answered Yehoshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we do, and wherever you send us we go.

17  “According to all that we obeyed Mosheh, so we obey you. Only, let יהוה your Elohim be with you, as He was with Mosheh.

18  “Whoever rebels against your command and does not obey your words, in all that you command him, is put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

Haberith HaChadashah Reading: Mt 5:17-48; Rom 7:21-25

Mat 5:17-48  “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.1 I did not come to destroy but to complete. Footnote: 1The Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures.

18  “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.1 Footnote: 1Lk. 16:17.

19  “Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.

20  “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,1 you shall by no means enter into the reign of the heavens. Footnote: 1Mt. 15:3-9, Mk. 7:7-13, John 7:19, Acts 7:53, Rom. 2:23-27, Gal. 6:13.

21  “You heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder,’ and whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.

22  “But I say to you that whoever is wroth with his brother without a cause shall be liable to judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raka!’ shall be liable to the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to fire of Gehenna.

23  “If, then, you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother holds whatever against you,

24  leave your gift there before the altar, and go, first make peace with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

25  “Be well-minded with your opponent, promptly, while you are on the way with him, lest your opponent deliver you to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.

26  “Truly, I say to you, you shall by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.

27  “You heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

28  “But I say to you that everyone looking at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29  “And if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is better for you that one of your members perish, than for your entire body to be thrown into Gehenna.

30  “And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you. For it is better for you that one of your members perish, than for your entire body to be thrown into Gehenna.

31  “And it has been said, ‘Whoever puts away his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’

32  “But I say to you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the matter of whoring,1 makes her commit adultery. And whoever marries a woman who has been put away commits adultery. Footnote: 1Mt. 19:9, Dt. 24:1.

33  “Again, you heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to יהוה.’

34  “But I say to you, do not swear at all, neither by the heaven, because it is Elohim’s throne;

35  nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Yerushalayim, for it is the city of the great Sovereign;

36  nor swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.

37  “But let your word ‘Yea’ be ‘Yea,’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ And what goes beyond these is from the wicked one.

38  “You heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,’

39  but I say to you, do not resist the wicked. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

40  “And he who wishes to sue you and take away your inner garment, let him have your outer garment as well.

41  “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

42  “Give to him who asks of you, and from him who wishes to borrow from you, do not turn away.

43  “You heard that it was said,1 ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ Footnote: 1Hate your enemy was “said,” not “written.”

44  “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those cursing you, do good to those hating you, and pray for those insulting you and persecuting you,

45  so that you become sons of your Father in the heavens. Because He makes His sun rise on the wicked and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.1 Footnote: 1Lk. 6:35, Acts 14:16-17.

46  “For if you love those loving you, what reward have you? Are the tax collectors not doing the same too?

47  “And if you greet your brothers only, what do you do more than others? Are the tax collectors not doing so too?

48  “Therefore, be perfect,1 as your Father in the heavens is perfect. Footnote: 1Ex. 17:1, Ps. 119:1, 1 John 2:5, Heb. 6:1.

Rom 7:21-25  I find therefore this law, that when I wish to do the good, that the evil is present with me.

22  For I delight in the Torah of Elohim1 according to the inward man, Footnote: 1Ps. 119:16.

23  but I see another law in my members, battling against the Torah of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24  Wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this body of death?

25  Thanks to Elohim, through יהושע Messiah our Master! So then, with the mind I myself truly serve the Torah of Elohim, but with the flesh the law of sin.
